Grades!!

Well, our grades are in . . .

Jackie worked his tail off this semester and he got two A's!  So proud of him!  It takes so much courage to go back to school after so long.  He did it!  He stayed up late and worked on his homework.  He only asked me for help just a few times.  So he's taking two more classes next semester.  He's taking Algebra and Intro into Environmental Health and Safety.  I think he will enjoy next semester even more once he gets started with the classes.

I got 1 C, 1 B, and 2 A's.  3.25 GPA.  It's no 4.0, but I'm so happy with it.  I was really afraid I was going to have to retake the Genetics class (the one I got the C in).  It's a core class and I had to make a C for the class to count.  On the second test I made a 58.  I had never in my life made a 58.  The questions were worded so tricky.  So I stayed up all night studying for the final.  I had to make a 78 to get a C.  The final was so hard.  I cried as soon as I walked out of the room.  However, the Lord allowed me to move on.  Jackie and I have been praying for a week that I wouldn't have to retake this class.  It would be so hard to take 15 hours next semester, if I was even able to get into the class.  There were already 4 people on the waitlist when I looked.  But anyway, it all worked out and now it's on to methods and then student teaching!!

So Christmas is just 4 days away.  I have not wrapped one present and Jackie has not finished Taylor's Santa present.  So, we might need some elves to come help us!  :)  We have just been relaxing and enjoying our break from school.  We are trying to not rush around and enjoy this season with Taylor.  We are going to go take a carriage ride and look at lights this week, and that should be a blast!  We are going to go take a carriage ride and look at lights this week, and that should be a blast!

We took two groups of kids to look at lights this week.  Saturday we picked up two boys who have been living in a hotel for three weeks.  We were going to take them our to eat, but when we realized they hadn't had a home cooked meal in that long we came to the house and had spaghetti.  They loved it!  We played Monopoly and Farkel.  No tv, no video games, just simple dinner and simple fun.  It was just what they needed.  They are sweet boys who have been through SO much lately.  That's the best part about what we do at CityChurch.  We really get to love on people who are hurting and really need to know there is a God who cares and loves them.  It was important to remind these boys that they are NOT FORGOTTEN!!! 

Sunday was our anniversary.  Hard to believe it's been two years.  It seems like we have been married forever (in a good way, not a bad way).  We started out the morning by being able to sleep in a little bit.  We started church an hour later, so we got to enjoy some quiet talking time before starting the day.  We don't usually get to do that so it was a treat!  Then we went to church and picked up kids.  All the kids went to big church and we didn't have Sunday school.  It was nice to be able to enjoy worship together.  We are taking kids home during that time, so we don't get to do it very often.  We had about 15 girls sitting with us, so we didn't get to sit right together, but we were still together!  Then we took kids home and went and ate some lunch. 

We ate at a Chinese food buffet.  You can tell we are so much more comfortable with each other and there were no high expectations.  We just wanted to be together and it was nice.  Food not so great, but they weren't too busy so we all got to talk and Taylor was being so funny so it was a very nice time! 

Then we went to the hospital to visit one of the kids Jackie picks up for church.  He was chasing one of his sisters and he was holding a pool stick while running. They have a wall heater and the stick got stuck in the wall heater and it jabbed into his stomach.  It didn't puncture the skin, but it ripped a hole in his stomach.  About four hours later he started throwing up and getting really sick so they took him to the hopsital and did surgery.  Thankfully he's going to be just fine.  It's a really common injury.  He was playing a game at the hospital when we visited.  Hopefully he will get to go home Christmas Eve. 

After that we ran to the grocery store and then took a short nap.  We then got up and made some poppers and Cherry cheesecake for a Christmas party.  We went to a Citychurch staff/Volunteer party and it was SO much fun!  It's so great to be able to spend time with friends and laugh and just enjoy being together.  I'm so blessed that my best friends are also my church friends! 

While there, our next door neighbor called and they needed some help.  So, I left the party and went over to their house.  EmmaLee fell last week and broke her knee cap.  She's 78 and her husband George is 81.  She was having some bathroom trouble and needed a woman's help.  So I helped her and spent about an hour and a half getting her situated. 

Then as soon as I walked back into the party, Taylor came and got me and said she had poop on her shoe.  How she did it, I dont know, but there was poop on her shoe.  So Sunday was my poop day! 
We stayed at the party until after 11:30.  Then we came home and all three snuggled in our bed. 

It was a wonderful day.  No drama, just fun and helping others.  I felt so much love.  I have a wonderful husband who is very giving and trustworthy.  I could never be more thankful for him than I am right now.  There is no way we could do all the many things we do if he wasn't so helpful and willing.  Happy Anniversary Jackie, I am one very blessed woman to have you in my life!  I look forward to see what things the Lord has in store for us in the coming years!  This year was an amazing year and we did so many things we never thought we would.  The Lord has placed some big dreams and desires in our hearts and can't wait to see how He fulfills them in the coming year!  I love you!

Mixed Emotions, but Christmas trumps them all!!

The past few weeks have been so crazy!  Mostly it's been just busy.  I've felt pulled in so many different directions!  Trying to balance family, work, church, and school has made me a crazy exhausted Mommy/wife/employee/student!  I have finally moved back over to my old/new job.  I love it.  It just feels like I was on a long vacation.  It's so nice to be back working with people who care about others and who are positive! 

I think that was the biggest struggle of the last three months.  I felt like all the negativity was zapping all the energy I had left.  I have really been trying hard to be a positive, encouraging wife for my husband.  But, I found myself slipping into a negative thinking pattern I worked so hard to avoid.  Jackie does such a great job of always being uplifting and I have never ever heard him say a negative thing about me or Taylor.  That's what I want to be!  I have learned that my thoughts are directly linked to the words that come out of my mouth.  Simple huh, but it just really hit me while I was working at Western.  The people I worked with seemed happy, but the more that I talked to them they really weren't.  They were stuck in a terrible place, but didn't want to do anything to change it.  Every problem was someone else's fault and they had nothing to do with it.  Am I like that too?  That was the constant question in my mind.  I don't want to be that way.  I'm different.  I have an incredible desire to be different and to love people and to teach them about Jesus!  It was the first time in my life I'd ever encountered people who didn't want to hear about Jesus or to even think about doing things differently.  Constantly I'd ask, Why am I here? 

After being away a few days, I've been thinking abot what I learned while there. 

Here's what it is . . .

My value is not in the stuff that I have.  This is a big deal for me because I LOVE stuff.  

My husband is a great man.  I mean a really good, honest, loving, trustworthy man.  I knew these things before, but it really became stuck in my mind after seeing how much I know he values me and Taylor.

My marriage is a priority.  I did realize the impact it made when it wasn't a priority and how that can effect it long term.

Not everyone will accept Jesus, but that's can't stop us from sharing.  This was so hard for me.  I guess because I'm surrounded by people who really love the Lord and are constantly serving Him and others.

I have really great friends.  I know the only way I survived was because of the people who prayed me through it!  So, thank you to those of you who did!

I'm sure I learned more, but that's what's coming to mind now.

Another idea that has been on Jackie and my hearts is being willing to surrender it all.  We think we are, but I know there are things that we are still holding back.  We had a call that really changed our perspective on this issue.  There was a young man (15) who was needing a home.  We had always said we wouldn't do teenagers right now.  However, we heard some of his story and we both just cried over him.  We began to pray and cry out to God for this young man.  We knew that our home was open the minute we sat down together.  He didn't end up coming to stay, but we were willing and I think that's what the Lord was asking of us at that moment.  There is nothing we want more than to have more kids in our home.  There are many obstacles, but we are working on tackling them one at a time.  One frustrating thing is it costs 18000 dollars to adopt a baby, but if we want to use donor sperm it's only 800 dollars.  We want to adopt.  There are so many kids who need homes and parents.  Almost every day we hear about kids who need help.  We want to be there.  So, we are praying and waiting.  I hate waiting and not having control.  Those are my two biggest areas of weakness.  Those are also the areas I've been tested the most in over this past year.  Growing pains . . .

I've also been thinking about how far we have come over the past year.  This time last year Don passed away.  Not a week goes by that we don't think about him.  I have learned so much about leaving a legacy from him.  He changed lives everywhere he went, ours included.  So much has happened in our church over the past year.  Most churches would have been fighting and bickering and trying to name things after him.  Not ours, we have seen an amazing increase in people coming to know the Lord.  We have seen change in our kids, we have had families come and we have a real live church thriving in Downtown Amarillo!  It's been so awesome to develop these friendships over the past year.  We almost double our Christmas card list!  It's awesome.  I love having people we can call on for help and people who are like-minded as friends.  We are surrounded by wise counsel and it's wonderful!  It's been fun seeing Taylor develop these friendships too.  She loves going to church and playing with her friends.  She's learning so much about her Bible too.    

Another area we've been working on changing our way of thinking is in the area of stuff.  We have so much stuff.  Taylor has so much stuff.  We usually go way over board for Christmas.  We spend money we don't have and for what?  So we cut way back this year.  I have really struggled with guilt about not spending that much or giving that many presents.  We are doing homemade gifts and just a few things for Taylor.  Christmas isn't about the presents anyway.  We have been taking a different family to see lights and have a meal with us for the past few weeks.  That's what Christmas is about!  Loving on people around you and giving of yourself and your time.  So, we decided to spend money on that instead of wasteful presents that don't get used.  It's been so much fun and so full of laughter and we will do it again next year!!

We took our Sunday school kids caroling to a nursing home.  The nursing home is about 5 blocks from the church and it's small.  I just knew that's where we needed to go.  When I called the nursing home to see if it was ok for us to come, the lady said, "Sure, we never have groups come."  So sad!  The people LOVED it, they laughed, and clapped, and sang along.  Many of our kids had never been in a nursing home before.  They were so good.  We were kinda concerned they would be rowdy, but they were great!  No pushing, hitting, yelling, and all those things are really big deals for the kids we work with!  We sang about 5 songs and passed out cards the kids had made.  It's been so much fun for us to watch these kids grow over the past year.  It's so wonderful to get to know each of them more and more.  I love finally being able to know most of their names!  Some of them are kinda of hard, but we are getting much better!  They are really starting to ask more questions and you can really see they are learning what we are teaching.  God is really working in their little hearts!  These are the kids that are going to change their neighborhoods!  I believe it!

We did take Taylor to see Santa at the credit union again this year.  She loved it.  I thought she was kinda bothered at first becuase she has asked for a princess desk for Christmas.  She also loves dressup stuff right now.  So, she got her box and it was small.  She said, "it's not a princess desk?"  Then when she opened it, she said, "WOW, he got the right stuff!"  So I learned something about her that night.  She was so excited with her slippers, crown and rings.  She didn't throw a fit, she was just using her thinking skills to decide what was in the box.  I was so proud of her.  She is learning the meaning of Christmas too! 

So this year, while gathered around your tree think about what really happened on that Christmas day so many years ago.  The God of the universe came down to Earth to be born as a little boy.  He could have been born in the nicest castle, but He chose a barn.  A messy, dangerous place, because we are all in messy dangerous places.  He came to the lowest of low, so that the lowest of low could come to Him!  That's the true meaning of Christmas, not the lights, food, presents, or the snow.  It's about Jesus.  Thank God it is, or where would we be?

Riding a bike

Taylor had been really working on riding her bike.  We take her across the street to the empty lot and let her ride, but the rocks make it kind of hard.  Our drive way is kinda short, just about the time she gets going she has to stop.  But, at Mom and Dad's she can really get going.  I'm so proud of how much she is learning.  Since we've gotten her breathing under control, she has been so much more active!  It's so fun to watch her run and jump and play without struggling for air. 

Taylor's Favorite Dinner Prayer

Taylor is such a great pray-er.  I think that's a made up word, but hopefully you know what I mean.  She loves to pray for people.  Also, everytime she gets an ouchie, she wants us to pray for her.  A few weeks ago she was praying before bed and asked the Lord into her heart.  We were so proud of her and talked to her about it a little bit, but didn't want to make too much out of it because she is so young.  But, in the weeks since, you can really see God working in her little heart.  She talks to God before she goes to bed and she asks Him to forgive her sins and help her make better decisions.  She also tells us she knows He is in her heart.  We have been talking about getting baptized, but she's a little scared of the water still.  But, I'm confident she will do it when she's ready!  I'm so thankful for all the people who surround her with love and prayers.  Her Daddy most of all!  He is a great spiritual leader and always willing to answer the questions she has. 

Halloween 2010

We had a fabulous Halloween this year!  We all dressed up and went to a costume party.  It was so much fun!  Taylor dressed up as Ariel, the little Mermaid.  We looked and looked for her costume.  It took her forever to decide what she wanted to be.  Everytime we went to the store she changed her mind.

Jackie was the hit of the party!  He dressed up as a little old lady.  It was HILARIOUS!  He even used a walker.  Everyone had a great time laughing at him.  He was such a great sport and played along and hammed it up!

That is Taylor's hair.  We painted it.  We looked everywhere for a wig, but they were the wrong color.  She did really good sitting still.  It was messy though!  When we changed our air filter, it was RED!  The fan in our bathroom is also red.  But it was worth it.  She loved it. 

By the way, it washed out just fine.  Took about 3 washes, but it all came out!

Granddad's 85th Birthday

The beginning of October we drove out to Phoenix for Granddad's 85th Birthday.  It was a great trip.  We were able to check into the hotel early and got to go swimming.  We laughed so much as Taylor jumped in and splashed all over the pool! 

All my cousins came by and we got to see them.  Taylor had a lot of fun playing with Maya and Mason.  But, the adults were all sick, so Jackie and I tried to keep our distance. 

Dad flew out for the party too.  He stayed all week, we were just there for two days. 

Granddad loved this big card we got him.  It was a card that you fold out and every part says something different.  It was great.   

On the way home, I got sick.  My tummy was so upset.  Jackie was great.  He drove the entire way home all by himself.  The whole 14 hours.  We stopped in Albuquerque and ate at Buca de Pepo.  We got to eat at the kitchen table.  It was so much fun.  If you get a chance to do it, you should!

Tri State Fair

This year we went ahead and went to the Tri State Fair.  It was very expensive, but Taylor had a blast riding all the rides, so maybe it was worth it.  She rode about 13 rides, which is a lot for a little girl.  She was exhausted by the time we left.

This was a weird ride.  The parents had to push the kids around.  Not really much of a ride.  The guy working it was even more boring!  He looked like he would seriously fall asleep right there.   

Taylor LOVES rides, and so does Jackie.  I love rides, but not ones that just spin you around in circles.  I like the drops.  Jackie and Taylor loved this ride.  I think they rode it twice.  She just squeeled with laughter!

Of course, we had to ride the carousel.  It was fun.  It was so HOT.  It was September but felt like the middle of the summer.  We went on the last day it was open.  It wasn't too busy when we went.  I dont' think we had to wait in line for any rides. 

Cadillac Ranch

We took a trip out to the Cadillac Ranch to let Taylor use her painting skills!  It was a beautiful day, a little windy, but not too bad.

It was so hard to get her to sit still long enough to take a picture.  She loved looking at what other people chose to paint on the cars.  Thankfully, everyone had painted clean stuff.

It was great fun.  While walking back to the car Taylor got everyone out there to play "Red Light, Green Light."  It was so funny watching all these adults playing with her.  She was so funny when someone didn't stop.  She wasted no time telling them they were out.  It was a great time!

Summer Time Fun!

We had so much fun playing outside this summer.  We are LOVING our backyard.  We hooked up a water hose and a tarp to Taylor's tower.  It was so much fun!  Jackie and I even took turns going down it! 

We even made a slip and slide.  Taylor would slide sometimes and then others just run through it.  Then she would yell, "I'm cheating!"  It was so funny.  We laughed and laughed.  That tree growing in the fence, it's finally gone now!!  YEAH!!

CityChurch Lunches

Taylor and I were able to go with Jackie on the first day of lunches this summer.  It was the only day we got to go.  I got to help make lunches a few times, but wasn't able to deliver.  This is one of our favorite things to do at CityChurch.  We are really able to get out and really love on people and show them that they are not forgotten.  God loves them!

Taylor loves to go out in the neighborhood.  She did great passing out the food.  The kids really liked seeing her too!

 

These kids are some that we pick up on Sundays too.  They are in our Sunday School class.  We love them!

This year Jackie built these awesome new trailers.  They worked awesome!  They were the perfect size to hold the crates.

TEXAS

Taylor named all these letters correctly!  And all by herself.  I think she will be reading before school starts!  She is so smart.  I'm not just saying that because I'm her Mommy either!

We went and saw the play TEXAS.  Taylor was so excited to see it.  She was scared by the lightning.  The Indian was her favorite person.  She loved the music and the horses.  We went with some family from out of town.  It was fun and a beautiful night.

First Sleepover!

This summer we had a sleepover at church this summer.  Taylor was SO excited to be able to go!  We talked about it for days and then she packed her bags early.  She even took a camera.  I can't wait to see how her pictures turned out!

All the smaller girls stayed all together.  They had a blast deciding who would sleep where.  They all wanted to be on the top bunk!

Taylor and her sweet friend "Baby Ellie."  Taylor is so crazy about Ellie.  She's so sweet.  Every Sunday Ellie is the first person Taylor looks for when we get to church.  I can't wait until she is old enough to come over and play with Taylor! 

The girls were such good listeners.  We had a devo and then the fun began.

We did makeup!  Actually, Taylor did her own!  She was so funny!  She loves makeup, but doesn't get to play with it much at home.  So, she went crazy!!

It is so much fun watching Taylor with kids her own age.  We are so glad she has so many friends! 

4th of July Camp-out

Over the 4th of July we took some kids from church camping for three days at Lake McKenzie.  We had so much fun.  It was a lot of work, but overall we all had a blast!  These kids had been camping, but had never slept in a tent, only cabins.  We all slept in our big tent, which was interesting!

We grilled out burgers and hotdogs and smores.  Taylor fell on the first day and burned her leg on the grill.  It was so scary.  It was a bad burn.  Thankfully it's healed up now.  She will have a scar but God definately answered our prayers that it was not more severe. 

We went fishing.  The kids loved the minnows.  Taylor wanted to free hers, so she did.

Jackie did a great job trying to teach Taylor.  We spent a lot of time baiting hooks and untangling lines.  We made a few serious fishers mad because we were so loud, but we had a blast and laughed so much!

We went swimming.  It rained on us while we were there.  It was SO muddy.  We had to climb up and down a really muddy slope to get to the swimming beach.  The kids had fun.  It was kinda cold, but really cool to see them just playing and have good fun and not being ornery!!

The kids still talk about our trip and can't wait to do it again! 

We went on a night time nature walk.  We took our flashlights and went exploring.  We got to watch the fireworks explode right over our heads.  We even let the kids shoot some off!  We actually still have some left over.  The kids did great and even helped clean up (after a little persuasion!)  We had church Sunday morning on the camp site.  We talked about David and Goliath.

The kids love having Taylor on the van. They all have fun being silly! 

These kids are why we at CityChurch.  Getting them away for a break really helped them.  They have been awesome lately.  They are still rowdy, but God is really working on all their little hearts.  I firmly believe these kids are going to do amazing things!
